Hoover Middle School was established in 1966 and was named after the 31st President of the United States, Herbert Clark Hoover.
Herbert Hoover was a hard working, brilliant man. Just 8 months after taking office, the stock market would crash catapulting the nation into the Great Depression. Although Hoover is often associated with the Great Depression, it was of no fault done by our 31st President.
Educated at Stanford University and independently wealthy, Hoover made a name for himself with his humanitarian efforts in Europe after World War I. Upon his return, he pursued American politics and was elected President of the United States in 1928.
His "Laissez-Fair" approach to economics deepened the Depression and caused Hoover to receive a great deal of criticism. However, he did set up food banks, unemployment benefits and lowered taxes.
Unfortunately, he underestimated the severity of the crisis which would blemish his otherwise impressive leadership, integrity and crisis management record.
Perhaps if he had been President at a different time, he would have a preferred legacy.
